Heels & Souls Recordings hit release number nine, looking across the
pond to Toronto in the mid '90s to reissue two blissfully Balearic
house gems from 100th Monkey. Alongside remastered versions of
'Raindance' and 'Nyika Nyika', the flip features a pumping remix of
'Raindance' courtesy of dream house hero Manuel Darquart, and a
previously unreleased '90s stunner, 'River Ride'.
The story of 100th Monkey is tied up in the tale of The Boomtang Boys,
a production trio and record label that put out a host of killer
Canadian productions. In the early '90s, brothers Tony and Paul Grace
had already released a 12 inch as Fun Wow and were on the lookout for
a keyboard player to flesh out some new ideas. A mutual friend
introduced them to Rob DeBoer in '91, who had a classical training in
piano and provided the perfect complement to Tony's drumming expertise
and Paul's DJ background. It was the perfect blend of inspiration and
musical knowledge and birthed The Boomtang Boys.
Toronto was rocking at the time, with an abundance of producers, raves
and record labels such as Stickmen, Hi-Bias and DNH at the top of
their game. Paul was a buyer at Starsound record store and was DJing
regularly drawing the trio's inspiration across the Atlantic to the
UK. Under a variety of different monikers, they began producing a
multitude of sounds for the label from the street soul grooves of
'Love Trip' under the Boomtang moniker to the hip house flavours of
