Over the last few years, Ricky Razu has released a swathe of
nostalgic, mood enhancing EPs on Happiness Therapy, drawing on his
impressive knowledge of classic deep house and New Jersey garage of
the 1990s. Back In Time, his first EP for the freshly minted Flipsight
label, is similarly classic sounding, albeit with a more expansive
range of influences and ideas. On opener 'Got Me Trippin', he smothers
a crunchy and jazzy house groove in twinkling pianos and eyes-closed
female vocal samples, before layering fluid, expansive piano solos
over a rolling deep house groove on 'Deep Blue'. Title track 'Back In
Time' is a deep, dusty and groovy affair with bags of smoky late night
atmosphere and luscious strings aplenty, while 'Be There' is sub
heavy, melodically positive and pleasingly colourful sonically.
