Once I finished that, it just made perfect sense to explore and have fun with hypnotic desert sounds and rhythms. Throw in the influence of London bass music, the exotica vibes of Eden Ahbez...and you've escaped to my desert island. We have tea and a fire, plus a camel. But she's not for transport, she's just chilling, so kindly give her some space." Sufi Swing I wanted to have some fun with a 'Khaliji' style rhythm (Khalij = Arabian gulf), with classic 80s drum machine sounds. Momo Loudiyi, a Moroccan multi disciplinary artist who played guitar on this tune, found a desert melody which fit perfectly with it, and Antonio Prosper played a lovely bassline. Dancehall Darawish The two guitar chords that start the track immediately shouted 'Dancehall' to me. Antonio Prosper then channeled some - previously unbeknownst to him - seemingly ancestral connection to a legendary Arab Casio keyboard master and played some lovely synth leads and beeps over the top. Leather Wallets 1JD My parents live in Amman, Jordan. Whenever I go, I make a habit of going to the downtown area of the capital 'The Balad' to record the sounds of the hustle and bustle. Last time I went, there was a guy selling leather wallets. Most of the market sellers are repeating rhythmic one liners, as they do in markets all over the world. But this one was special, as instead of saying the line, he had a speaker with a recorded loop of his voice 'Leather Wallets, 1JD, all styles'. I stood there recording the sound and I could feel a Drum N Bass rhythm. I pretty much kept the loop as it was, and it inspired the whole song. Hakawati Another collaboration with Fly on this one, who provides some magic with his flugel horn and guitar over the Guembri loop. I found the vocal sample serendipitously (testing the workflow of live sampling from my Soundburger into my MPC), and when I dropped it on top of the track it just fit, again, it did not need much editing! It feels like it was made for it. The person speaking sounds like a 'Hakawati', which means storyteller in Arabic. There's an age-old tradition of these storytellers, which still exists today, where people go to cafes and watch these animated characters, usually brandishing long wooden sticks and smacking them on the floor for added excitement. Dubble Apple I was going for a reggae version of an old Arabic jazz track. But this is not that at all! It went in a very different direction...Fly played bass and keys on this one to get it going...and I was delighted to collaborate with two old friends for the other parts. Karim Sultan, a multi disciplinary artist and wonderful Oud player, and Jason Parry, also an island resident (the Isle Of Wight), who sprinkled the track with some sweet desert blues guitar. What I particularly love is that neither of them knew what the other was going to record, but both their parts fit the sound space comfortably. . : x .: ::.... \ :: ____________\__ . . . ..:::: ( (.. _ ) \ \\____/((_)/ <(+ C13H16ClNO > feed the horse & invest in pinecones +) \__\________/::....
